Dear Parents,

This is true for me, and I think there is a moment in nearly every parent’s journey when you stop and think, “Is this ever going to get better?”

Your child is raging, or withdrawing, or rejecting every kindness you offer, and you’re left standing in the kitchen, heart pounding, wondering what all the therapeutic parenting books forgot to tell you.

I’ve sat in that same uncertainty with hundreds of parents over the years. Yes, I am that old. Sometimes they whisper it through tears: “I’m trying everything, but my child still doesn’t seem to really love me.”

And here’s what I tell them every time:
Healing doesn’t happen through talking. It happens through experiencing life together. How you are is how they will be. Stay the course.

You, my friend, are the most powerful experiential tool in your child’s healing.
When you stay steady through their storms, you lend them your love.
When you return after a rupture, you teach that love triumphs over conflict.
When you delight in them, even for ten seconds, you build the neural pathways of worthiness—this is internalized self-love.

A father once told me, “I finally realized I can’t lecture my son into feeling safe. I have to be safe, over and over, until believes me.” Brilliant.

That’s it. That’s the work. It’s ordinary, invisible, and utterly healing.

Maybe no one has said this to you lately, so I will:
You are doing life changing, brain-changing work.

You are rewiring a child for a better life. For a love filled life.

So tonight, when you’re lying in bed wondering if you did enough, remember this: love is experiential therapy.

It’s not perfect. It’s practiced. And you, dear parent, are practicing beautifully.
