Dear Parents,

There’s a particular kind of grief that comes with parenting a neurodivergent child. It’s not grief for who they are. It’s grief for how often the world misunderstands them.

In this week’s UnMuted Love episode, I interview Shelby Czarnick, licensed independent clinical social worker, ADHD specialist, and founder of a nature-based mental-health center serving neurodivergent families. And what unfolds is one of those conversations that recalibrates your nervous system just by listening.

Shelby names something many parents feel but can’t quite articulate:

Sometimes trauma isn’t a single catastrophic event.

Sometimes trauma is the steady drip of living in a world that wasn’t built for your wiring.

Our neurodivergent children experience:

  • Chronic correction
  • Misread intentions
  • Punishment for creativity
  • Shame for sensory needs
  • Labels like “lazy,” “too much,” “defiant,” or “dramatic”

Over time, that daily misattunement accumulates.

The nervous system adapts. It braces. It anticipates rejection. It scans for failure before it even begins.

And what we often see in the home isn’t just ADHD, autism, or sensory processing differences.

We see:

  • Explosive reactions
  • Shutdown
  • Restlessness
  • Avoidance
  • Perfectionism
  • Control battles

Not because our kids can’t regulate, but because their nervous systems have rarely felt safe enough to. They are wired differently in a world that rarely slows down to understand them.
