When Your Child’s Voice Was Snuffed Out Before They Could Even Talk
Sep 01, 2025
Dear Parent,
Most of our children’s voices were silenced long before we ever met them.
When their earliest cries for food, soothing, and safety went unanswered, their brains wired in a painful message: “I don’t matter. I’m not wanted. My voice isn’t heard.”
Fast-forward to your home now. That silence shows up as chatter that makes no sense (to you), swearing, spitting, throwing, shutting down, or on the flip side, your voice rising in frustration, correction, or full-on yelling. Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: your child isn’t broken, and neither are you. Your attunement is the glue they need to feel safe enough to “chill” in your presence. Your adoring eye contact. Your calm presence. Your repair after you, well, blow it.
You don’t have to be perfect (thank the dogs). You just have to keep coming back. That’s the medicine. That’s the way their silenced voice recovers in your home.
Want to go deeper? I unpack all of this in my latest episode of Unmuted Love: The Magic of Attunement. This is the place to find hope for your parenting journey.
