Tantrums Are Cries For Connection

Mar 29, 2021

Dear Parent,

A tantrum is a loud shout for help. Traumatized children lack skills to process conflicting emotions, deprivation, loneliness, separation, excitement, disappointment, anger, frustration, fear, sadness, and despair. These feelings and many others all trigger tantrums.  If we called these emotional expressions dysregulated panic, I firmly believe we would assist our children differently, more lovingly, to soothe.

When your child is tantrumming, show compassion and understanding.  Dysregulated panic scares your child to the core and s/he needs your help to recover.

Angry holding is nothing like gentle restraint.  Sometimes our children need gentle restraint to keep everyone safe.

Love matters,

Ce
