Scarcity Gets Hardwired

Jan 09, 2023

Dear Parent,

Fost-adopt children who come home to you from an institutional setting or maltreatment environment—abusive biological parent or relative’s home, children's receiving home, orphanage, group home, treatment program, foster family care--have no idea about family life expectations. Every child for herself is likely what she experienced.

Now, in your home she is being asked to share.  Just this small act of kindness in your home might set off a neurochemical cascade signaling fear of scarcity.  These systems are hard wired in early childhood, so even the child who has been in your family for many years may still have the hardwiring of the orphanage child she once was.
There is always going to be enough for everyone may be a "foreign" concept to many traumatized children.

Love matters,

Ce
