Parenting Holes
Jun 12, 2025
Dear Parent,
The thing about holes is...first realizing you’re in one!
Before you can stop making it worse, before you can let go, before things blow up in your face… you first need to come to the realization that you’re in a hole to begin with. This rule of holes is true about parenting holes, too. The hardest part is realizing that you’re in a hole in the first place. You’re so focused on parenting, you don’t see any alternative in getting out of your sinking situation. Here are a few common holes for parents of children from difficult beginnings to help you with this realization:
- If you have an unhappy child that is constantly complaining and you are trying to make them “happy,” you’re in a hole.
- If you’re often losing your patience with your child, you’re in a hole.
- If you’re searching for diagnosis after diagnosis or therapist after therapist for years on end to heal your child, you’re in a hole.
- If you’ve been trying to make your parent/child relationship “work” for years using the same set of skills, guess what? You’re in a hole.
- Similarly, if you have been switching from one parenting solution after another and nothing works, double guess what? You’re in a big hole.
- The first rule of parenting holes is to stop digging, drop your agenda, and breathe.
