Does Shame Work? (Part 1)
Jun 26, 2025
Dear Parent,
Does shame have a legitimate role in parenting children, any children, attachment challenged or not? Can children be raised up into respectful, responsible, loving adults without a big dose of childhood shame about their human impulses and urges? It often seems to parents that shaming feels like doing the loving thing. If s/he doesn't feel ashamed of that behavior, s/he will grow up and keep doing it, right?
Spare the rod and spoil the child? Spare the shame and spoil the child?
How are we behind closed doors in our own homes with our own children? Shaming? Loving? Shaming and loving?
I want to talk with someone who was raised with NO shame. I don't believe I have met that person yet. Is there such a person? Are you that person? If so, did you grow up with clear, moral integrity? It is my hope that you did.
Talk to a few people close to you about this. Awareness is everything.
What I know for sure. Love strong. Love long.
