Attuned Parenting in a Distracted World
Nov 06, 2025
Dear Parent,
I know you are concerned and monitoring the amount of computer, phone, tablet, music player, and video game device your children are consuming.
Personally, I am worried about how much you are consuming.
If the antidote to attachment challenge is attuned engagement, then how do electronic gadgets interfere with you being present, attuned and engaged with your child?
Frequently, kids of all ages resentfully comment to me that their parent is always on their phone, computer, Nook, Kindle, iPad, etc. They aren't trying to say anything in particular about electronics, per se. You know they love their own. They are, however, often ranting about how their parents never listen to them.
Somewhere during the rant, something like this gets said with plenty of attitude:
She is always on her phone.
He is always on his computer.
She is always playing Candy Crush on her iPad.
He works all the time at home on his laptop.
I repeat: the antidote to attachment challenge is attuned engagement. Turn your own electronics off.
