Always Dysregulated To Start

Oct 03, 2021

Dear Parent,

When your school-age child is out of sorts, you might ask if something happened at school today that was upsetting. This may seem obvious, except that the meltdown is over not getting ice cream for dinner.  It's hard to keep in mind events that happened seven or more hours ago are triggering the ice cream tantrum.  Parenting our kids is tricky.

Dysregulation can last for minutes, hours, even days.  Children with trauma are usually dysregulated, until the safety of the family environment, appropriate therapies, and time create within the child a sense of felt safety. Until then, dysregulation is the name of the game, exacerbated by the events of each day.

Dear Mommy and Daddy,

I am always a little on the verge of a tantrum.

Love,

Your Precious Child

Love matters,

Ce
